Affirm Releases Statement in Response to Proposition 139 Arizona Abortion Access Ballot Initiative Victory in 2024 General Election
Tuesday, after a contentious race in the 2024 General Election to determine the future of abortion access in Arizona, Proposition 139, the Arizona for Abortion Access ballot initiative passed with overwhelming approval from Arizona voters.
The campaign to amend Arizona’s constitution collected a record-breaking 823,685 signatures to secure a spot statewide on the Arizona ballot in the election and fought multiple attempts from opposition to dismantle the description language or remove it from the ballot entirely. The citizens have spoken, and they elected to preserve and protect the right to an abortion in Arizona through a constitutional amendment.
In response, Bré Thomas, CEO of Affirm Sexual and Reproductive Health released the following statement:
“This victory is hard fought and well deserved. Arizonans have spoken, and they want to restore sanity in our state by putting our important health care decisions back where they belong, between the doctor and patient. After too many years of uncertainty and instability, we are relieved to look forward to having abortion access restored and protected through this constitutional amendment. We know that this took a lot of hard work from dedicated organizations, volunteers, and amazing storytellers willing to relive their trauma to teach Arizonans the dangers of abortion bans. We must remain vigilant as this fight is not over, hard work lies ahead to protect and implement this constitutional right in our state— but for now, we celebrate and congratulate Yes on Prop 139.”
